Important Update for Ontario IFTA Carriers: 2025 Credential Delays

The Ontario Ministry of Finance has announced a temporary delay in issuing 2025 International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) credentials. This announcement affects all Ontario-based IFTA carriers, but there's no need for immediate concern. Here's what you need to know about the situation and how to maintain compliance during this period.

What's Happening?

The Ministry is experiencing delays in receiving IFTA decals, which will impact the distribution of 2025 IFTA registration licenses and credentials. The delay also affects walk-in service at their Oshawa office located at 33 King St. West. However, the Ministry expects to resolve this issue before January 2025.

Key Points for Carriers

Deadlines Remain Unchanged

Despite the delay, the December 31, 2024 deadline for renewal or new applications remains in effect. Carriers should proceed with their renewal applications as usual.

Grace Period in Effect

IFTA regulations provide a two-month grace period (January and February) for displaying renewed credentials. During this time, carriers can continue operating by showing either:

  • Valid current or prior year IFTA credentials from their operating jurisdiction

  • A valid single-trip permit from the IFTA jurisdiction where they're operating

Important Compliance Note

Remember that the grace period only applies to displaying renewed credentials. It does not extend the deadline for filing your renewal application.

How to Stay Updated

To ensure you receive timely updates about your 2025 credentials:

  1. Keep an eye on your email for Ministry communications

  2. Consider registering for ONT-TAXS online services for easier account management

  3. Sign up for the Ministry's email alert service at www.ontario.ca/Finance-Alerts

Looking Ahead

While this delay may cause some temporary inconvenience, the Ministry has systems in place to ensure carriers can continue operating smoothly. The two-month grace period provides adequate coverage while the credential distribution issue is resolved.

Remember to maintain your current credentials in good condition, as you may need to display them longer than usual this year. Stay proactive with your renewal application and keep communication channels open with the Ministry for any updates or changes to this situation.
